Making Your Mask More Comfortable
Finding the Right Mask and Fit
Remember that positive airway pressure therapy is a highly effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. However, this treatment has no benefit if it's not used. One reason that people may stop using PAP therapy is that they may experience some discomfort with their masks.
Comfort tips
It is vitally important to find a mask that fits properly and is comfortable to wear. Here are some tips for making your mask more comfortable:
- Mark the headgear straps with permanent marker to remember where they should be fastened. By fastening them in the same place every time, you'll get the best fit. You may also prolong the life of your mask.
- Pull the mask over your head or use the quick-release clip to remove it.
- Don't over-tighten the mask. It should rest lightly and comfortably on your face, and the cushion should not be crushed against your face.
- Do not block the exhalation port between the mask and the connecting tubing from the device. Position the port away from your bed partner.
Optional Accessories
There are many accessories on the market to make your mask more functional and comfortable. Here are just a few:
- Chinstraps are for people who sleep with their mouths open but who want to wear nasal pillows or a nasal masks. The chinstrap fits at the crown of your head and under your chin to keep your mouth closed while you sleep.
- Nose bridge protectors are pads that sit on the bridge of your nose, underneath your mask, to prevent soreness.
- Mask liners fit between your face and your mask to protect your skin from red marks. Some also help to prevent soreness on the bridge of your nose.
- Headgear pads fit over the straps on your headgear to prevent strap marks.
